KKN UGM Verticulture Workshop Update

December 27, 2015 - Uncategorized

Our friends left for their KKN destinations on 1 July 2015 in the middle of Ramadan. We know it might not be easy for them to be away from their homes at this point, when traditionally is for spending time with families and friends. But there is no better time than Ramadan to serve others, apply our education and, more importantly, learn in real life settings. We sincerely wish our friends the best in their pursuit of knowledge.
In the meantime, we would like to give an update from the verticulture workshops we had previously. We have been taking care of their vertical planters and their plants have not only thrived but also started to produce. Flowers have blossomed and become fruits on many pepper plants. The red peppers are producing earlier than the rawit ones.
Those are from the early workshops, ie. by friends who are at Lewintana and Bawean. Whereas the later ones, we can see the results from the mix planting methods. While the peppers are still growing, the sawi (a kind of chinese cabbage) are ready to be harvested and producing the flowers, which can be seeded for the next planting. This illustrates how a mix planting can be done in a household, even on a verticulture.
These exercises show that verticulture is a good alternative for families to produce healthy products for themselves while having fun making their small garden more beautiful.
And as for our friends doing their KKN away from home, we wish you a happy Ramadan and merry Lebaran with your new families.
