A Visit from Sleman’s MA Honor Students

On Thursday, 19 November 2015, 50 honor students from Madrasah Aliyah (MA – Islamic High School) through out Sleman district, visited Indmira to learn about agribusiness. The activities were started at 9 o’clock in the morning with a tour of the facilities at the headquarters. Students were shown research results in agriculture, environment, and renewable energy. Mr. Budi Haryono, a research staff, then taught the students about hydroponic, which they got to practice also. They also showed great interests in the hydroponic system developed at Indmira, the constructions as well as the nutrients.

Lunch was also provided to the students and catered by Letusee Health Food restaurant. Team Letusee was headed by one of its cofounders, Mrs. Nurul Haida, who was not only cooking and serving, but also teaching the value of healthy consumption. She further explained the ingredients, such as red rice, tempeh nuggets, matah hot sauce, and green salads, and how to prepare them. The drinks were rosella and kombucha teas; the latter has become one of Letusee’s signature products.

After lunch break and midday prayer, Mr. Azmi Basyarahil led a discussion on agribusiness. As a staff in Marketing and Communication, he first explained the opportunities in agricultural commerce and the importance of youths in it. Mr. Basyarahil was a very active student and involved in many school organizations. He was the student body president at SMA 1 Depok in 2005 and chairman of BEM Fakultas Ekonomi dan Bisnis UGM in 2009. He used this leadership skill to effectively communicate with these students and opened their eyes to exciting field agribusiness using several visual aides, such as videos.

At the end of the visit, the students did not go home empty handed. They received hydroponic kits to be used at their schools.
