World’s Largest Rare Orchids Bloom in Yogyakarta

Largest and heaviest orchid in the world, Grammatophyllum speciosum commonly referred as sugarcane orchids, found blooming in the middle of the courtyard garden ornamental plants belonging to one of the agribusiness company in Jogjakarta that was on the road Kaliurang km 16.3.
Sugarcane orchids spread naturally from Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and New Guinea. According to Edi Wantoro, one of the research staff of PT indmira, sugar cane orchid is one type of orchid species that is very rare, which currently can only be found in two places, Kebun Raya Bogor and in PT Indmira.
The sucar cane orchid is a type of orchid flowers among the largest and most severe types of other orchids. The main characteristic of sugarcane orchid is its large size. Malai can grow to a height of 2.5 – 3 meters with a diameter of about 1.5-2 cm. In each panicle could have dozens, even reaching a hundred flowers. Each flowers can reach about 10 cm in diameter. This figure is similar to the stem of sugarcane, because it was then the orchid is known as sugarcane orchids. In a mature clump, sugarcane orchids can weigh more than 1 ton. That is why the plant is worthy of the title as the largest and heaviest orchids or giant orchid.
Sugarcane orchid flowers (Grammatophyllum speciosum) colored yellow with brown spots, red or blackish. The sugarcane orchid durable and not easily fade. Although it has been cut from a giant flower stalks are super big and heavy it can last 2 months
Edi Wartono who also took care this forestare also saying that, sugarcane orchids takes one year starting from the process of removing the flower stalks until the fruit ripe. Sugarcane orchid usually breed on the sidelines of the big tree, but in the absence of a large tree, orchid sugar cane planted into large pots.
