The Planting of One hundred Sengon Saplings by CatholicYouths of St. Alfonsus Church, Nandan

Youths’ awareness of environmental issues should always be encouraged, considering the changes that neglect nature and the society’s little knowledge on the long term effects of environmental degradation. Moreover, there is so much development that has cut down the amount of Ruang Terbuka Hijau (RTH – green open space) in many regions. It is important to have social movements to keep tree re-planting going, while reminding ourselves to love and protect our environments.

The CatholicYouths of St. Alfonsus Church, Nandan, Yogyakarta, did just that on 27 June 2015. According to them, to face such a social challenge, it is necessary to have youth activities involving direct interactions with nature. They had an event to plant 100 tree saplings to help re-green a patch of land.

The location was at the village of Hargobinangun, Sleman, Yogyakarta, using 100 saplings of Sengon laut (Albizia falcataria). There were around 50 participants cleaning and  digging the plot then, planting and watering the plants. This event was a collaboration among the youth group, Indmira and the Fun Farm on Merapi (FFM). Indmira provided the liquid fertilizer SNN, while FFM supplied the saplings.

The hope of the CatholicYouths of St. Alfonsus Church, Nandan, is to build and conserver nature and actively be involved in more tree plantings in the future. (An)
